In Greek mythology, Sisyphus spent an eternity struggling over and over to push a giant boulder uphill, only to see it always come rolling back down.  Does this feel like what you’re doing in your life?  Are you struggling with the same old things over and over?

Lots of us do that!  It isn’t easy to make lasting changes.  We kind of get into a groove, and we just keep making the same choices over and over.  Unfortunately, when we do that, we keep getting the same results, over and over.  Do you think it might be time for a change?

There’s a certain comfort in doing what’s familiar.  We don’t have to think about it.  It fits like a comfortable well-worn pair of jeans.  We just keep going on automatic pilot.  Then all of the sudden, we realize that we’ve gotten ourselves back in the same old corner!  How could that have happened again?

It doesn’t matter what it is.  It can be continuing to be a couch potato, eating poorly, not getting enough rest, drinking too much, not making time for friends and family, staying in a bad relationship, saying “yes” to too many requests, overspending …  I could go on and on with all of the things that we do to make our lives difficult.  How long can we continue to do this to ourselves before we begin to have serious consequences?  How long before it’s too late to change?

Our lives won’t change for the better until we sit down and have a serious talk with ourselves.  We have to begin making different choices over and over, until we start becoming more comfortable with the changes we’re making.  If we fall down and relapse back into our old behaviors, we need to just pick ourselves up and start over again.  There’s no shame in falling down.  The problem only comes if we don’t get back up.

If we need help, we have to reach out.  Help can come from prayer, supportive friends and family, 12-step programs, and professionals.  Sometimes there may be a need for medication and/or counseling.  Sometimes it’s a matter of getting educated by reading books, taking classes, and learning about whatever we’re struggling with.

Please put down whatever boulder you’ve been struggling with.  Take an honest look at your life.  See your part in making it difficult.  That’s where the power lies.  You can’t change anyone but yourself.  Get the help you need.  Forge a new path for a brighter future.  You deserve to have an easier life.  The people who care about you want to see you happier, healthier, and freer to be who you’re meant to be.  Do it today!  Make a start!

Until next time,

Linda

  • Hi Everyone,

I received an email this morning from a reader, that I wanted to share with you. She gave me permission to quote her. She said,”You have such a loving and gentle way of ‘kicking us in the butt’ thank you for the reminder of the opportunity of choice around change.”

I always try to be loving and gentle when I write a post, or when I sit across from clients, but, at the same time, I also want to help people learn how to make things different in their lives. Recognizing the power of choice is a huge key in moving forward successfully.

I love to hear your thoughts or your questions, so please leave a comment or send an email. I’ll answer back as soon as I can.

    Take good care,
    Linda
