In last week’s post, I wrote about the changes I’ve been making to improve my health and well-being. Creating change can be challenging, but maintaining change can sometimes be downright daunting. What will create the personal empowerment that’s necessary if we want to succeed?
We have to get really clear on why we want to change. The decision to change needs to come from within us, not from anyone else. How will our lives be better? What are we gaining? There needs to be enough gain to create the momentum and motivation to carry us through the hard times.
What are the things that might trip us up, and how can we plan ahead for them? What thoughts and frustrations might come to our minds? Building an awareness of our negative self-talk can be helpful. It will allow us to anticipate and deal with the continued obstacles we might place in our own way. Are there times, activities, places, or people that would make change more difficult? We might need to make some difficult decisions about letting them go.
What kind of support do we need? Are there friends and family who will be there for us when we need encouragement and inspiration? Do we also need the expertise and guidance of a professional? Maybe we need a team of personal and professional supporters.
What preparations do we need to make? Do we need to study and learn some things first? Do we need to buy some equipment, if there’s an exercise component? Do we need to get junk food out of the house, and replace it with healthy, nutritious food, if we want to eat in a more healthful way?
Most important of all, we need to really believe that we’re worth the time and effort that it’s going to take to create and maintain the change we’ve decided we want. How about you? Are you worth it? Do you deserve to be healthier, happier, and more at peace with yourself? Of course you do. I do. We all do! We deserve to be our best selves!
